Iran Calls 'Snapback' of UN Sanctions Illegal, Baseless

On September 28, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement in response to the restoration of canceled UN sanctions and the activation of the "snapback" mechanism. This is reported by Mehr. The Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic emphasized that the actions of the E3 and the US, which abuse the "snapback" mechanism, are illegal and baseless. The Ministry noted that UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the restrictions contained therein, which relate to Iran's peaceful nuclear program, should be considered invalid within the established deadlines.
The Ministry added that although the three European countries, "at the instigation and under the pressure of the US," have activated the mechanism known as "snapback," they themselves have substantially violated their obligations under the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) due to constant and serious failures in the implementation of these obligations, and have abused the JCPOA dispute settlement process.
"The attempt to restore the effect of the canceled resolutions is not only legally unfounded and unjustified, but also completely unacceptable from a moral and logical point of view. The peaceful nuclear program of the Islamic Republic has already been comprehensively studied in UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA attached to it, and its ten-year term should be considered completed on the specified date of October 18, 2025," the Iranian Foreign Ministry statement specifically says.
